NewSpin4: Transport beyond electrons

The quest for low-power consuming beyond-Moore electronics has recently led physics researchers to step away from currents carried by moving electrons–that efficiently scatter with other degrees of freedom and thus suffer from a large amount of dissipation–to transport currents that do not involve moving electrons but are instead carried by collective degrees of freedom. In addition to this application perspective, this brings about a large wealth of unexplored many-body physics and novel collective phenomena. Many of the systems under the study in this context are physically very different yet share a closely related theoretical treatment and are faced with similar challenges. In this three-day conference we plan to bring together physicists confronted with these challenges while working on transport involving more than just single electrons. We expect that the different fields and backgrounds will lead to cross-fertilization. Hereby the focus of the conference will be on spin-related phenomena, which will include both experimental as well as theoretical contributions, with emphasis on the latter. The theme connects technologically relevant fields such as spintronics, magnonics, and mesoscopic physics to fields like ultracold atoms, strongly-correlated electronic systems, and high-energy physics.
