Conference venue/institute

Conference venue
Minnaert building
Leuvenlaan 4, room 211
3584 CE Utrecht
The Netherlands

Route Description: from the hotel, take bus 11 towards “De Uithof/UMC”. From the station, you can either take that bus or bus 12 in the same direction. Get out at the stop “Botanische Tuinen”. You should be able to see the Minnaert building from there: it is easily identifiable both by its color (red) and the big letters spelling its name out front.

All talks will take place in MIN211. Once you go in, and up the stairs, you will find yourself in a big hall. Go to the left first, then along the row of red booths. At the end, you will find a set of double doors. Go through them, up the stairs, and through the doors labeled “collegezalen”. Room 211 will be in front of you on the right after you go through the doors.

The conference lunches will be served on the upper floor of the restaurant of the Minnaert Building

Route description Utrecht station - Uithof The conference venue and the Institute for Theoretical Physics are both located at the university campus 'De Uithof'. To reach the conference venue in the building 'Aardwetenschappen' and the institute in the Minnaert Building you can take bus 11 (direction 'De Uithof', busstop 'Botanische Tuinen') from Utrecht Central Station. You can also take bus numbers 12 or 12S (direction De Uithof/AZU) and get off the bus at busstop Kruytgebouw (Padualaan).

Bustickets (strippenkaart) For public transport you need a 'strippenkaart'. A 'strippenkaart' is valid everywhere in the Netherlands on busses, trams and the underground. It is not valid on trains. You can buy a strippenkaart of 15 'strippen' (€ 6,90) or 45 'strippen' (€ 20,40) at the busstation, but also in shops as Bruna, Ako and Albert Heijn (supermarket). The only kind of bustickets sold by the busdriver is the 'strippenkaart' of 2, 3 and 8 'strippen', at a price of resp. € 1,60, € 2,40 and € 6,40. City rides from the Railroad Station Utrecht to 'De Uithof' cost 3 'strippen' (prices: July 2008). You can find information on local busses at GVU (Gemeentelijk Vervoersbedrijf Utrecht).

Maps A map of the campus 'de Uithof' (and of Utrecht City Centre) can be found here. A small picture of the Uithof (with the 'Minnaert Building', 'Aardwetenschappen' and the busstop) can be found here.

Tourist information

The city of Utrecht is located in the geographical centre of the Netherlands, and has a rich and long history. Traces of this history can be found everywhere in the medieval town centre. The city’s many monuments, including the eye-catching Dom tower and the canals with the wharves (unique in the world), are definitely worth paying a visit. Restaurants There are many restaurants in the centre of Utrecht. Suggestions for restaurants in the area close to the Malie Hotel and Hotel Mitland (Biltstraat, bus 11, busstop 'Wittevrouwen') are:
- Algarve (portuguese)
- Djakarta (Indonesian)
In the area close to the campus you can find the pancake restaurant 'Theehuis Rhijnauwen'. You can reach it by bike (10 minutes from de Uithof) or by bus from Utrecht Central Station. You can also reach the restaurant by canoe. You can rent a canoe close to 'de Uithof' with Rijnstroom. It takes appr. 1 hour.

The conference dinner on Friday Jan. 8th will take place in:
