Students working on Innovation and Social Learning
Anna Oleksiak
In my research project I’m trying to assess the relationship of brain
volume (or component structures) with various indices of behavioural flexibility.
My second research question will examine the links between behavioural flexibility
and extinction risk in primates.
Tjerk Bieringa
I am trying to find out whether adverse habitat-conditions favour more innovative
primate species, reasoning that more intelligent species are better able to
handle relative fast shifting environmental conditions. For this study I will
be analysing previously published data from the literature.
Susan Peeters
My research project is about social learning and
innovation in guppies. I'm examining the responses of
guppies to novel objects and trade-offs between
conflicting public and private information.

I study social learning and innovation in the guppy and focus mainly on sexual
differences during these processes. Innovation is thought to be an important
contributor to the spread of novel or modified behaviour through animal populations.
I am involved in research that addresses questions like: who is an innovator?
When and how is novel behaviour incorporated in a population’s repertoire?
My other scientific interests are phenotypic plasticity and its role in evolution.
Furthermore, I am an experienced computer programmer in different languages.
