WONDER prizes for PhD research

Every year, WONDER will hand out the Stieltjes PhD Prize, on behalf of the Foundation Compositio Mathematica, the annual prize for the best PhD thesis.

All Dutch PhD theses in mathematics automatically participate in this competition.

The prize consists of €2500 in cash, and a research talk to be given at one of the WONDER activities.

            Winner for 2015

             In 2015 the Stieltjes prize was awarded to

  • Dr. Rutger Kuyper for his thesis "Computability, Probability and Logic"  defended at Radboud University on June 10th, 2015. Promotors: Prof.dr. M. Gehrke (Univ. Paris Diderot) and Prof.dr. P. Stevenhagen (Univ. Leiden). Co-promotor en adviser: Dr. S.A. Terwijn

            Winners for 2014

             In 2014, two Stieltjes prizes were awarded. The second prize was made available by the Stieltjes Foundation.

  • Dr. Ziyang Gao won the Stieltjes prize for his thesis "The mixed Ax-Lindemann theorem and its applications to the Zilber-Pink conjecture" defended at Leiden University on November 24th, 2014. Promotor: Prof.dr. S.J. Edixhoven and Prof.dr. E. Ullmo (IHES, Université Paris-Sud).
  • Dr. Bram L. Gorissen won the  Stieltjes prize for his thesis "Practical robust optimization techniques and improved inverse planning of HDR brachytherapy"  which he defended  with a cum laude distinction at Tilburg University on September 19th, 2014. Promotor: Prof.dr.ir. D. den Hertog; co-promotor: Dr.ir. A.L. Hoffmann

  • Dr. Pavel Zorin-Kranich won the Stieltjes prize for his thesis "Ergodic theorems for polynomials in nilpotent groups" defended at the University of Amsterdam on September 12th, 2013. Promotor: Prof.dr. Ale Jan Homburg; co-promotor: Dr. Tanja Eisner.
  • Dr.ir. Benjamin Sanderse won the Stieltjes prize for his thesis "Energy-conserving discretization methods for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations - Application to the simulation of wind-turbine wakes" defended at the Eindhoven University of Technology on March 19th, 2013. Promotor: Prof.dr.ir. Barry Koren.

  • Dr. Sonja Cox won the Stieltjes prize for her thesis "Stochastic Differential Equations in Banach Spaces: Decoupling, Delay Equations and Approximations in Space and Time" defended at the Technical University of Delft on March 12th, 2012. Promotor: Prof.dr. Jan van Neerven

  • Dr. Jop Briët won the Stieltjes prize for his thesis "Grothendieck inequalities, non-local games and optimization"  defended at the University of Amsterdam on October 27th, 2011. Promotor: Prof.dr. H.M. Buhrman

  • Dr. Peter J. Bruin won the Stieltjes prize for his thesis "Modular curves, Arakelov theory, algorithmic applications" defended in Leiden on September 1st, 2010. Promotor: Prof.Dr. S.J. Edixhoven, co-promoter Dr. R.S. de Jong
  • Dr. Dan A. Roozemond won the Schoonschip Stimulans prize for his thesis "Algorithms for Lie Algebras of Algebraic Groups"defended in Eindhoven on March 18th, 2010. Promotor: Prof.Dr. A. Cohen
