Upcoming Seminars

week 21 - 2017

Monday, 22 May 2017
Delta ITP Advanced Course ATTPI
Lectures: May 22, 29
Exam: June 12
Time & Place: 11h00-17h00 in BBG 7.12, Utrecht
Lecturer: Giandomenico Palumbo (UU)
Module 3: Pseudo-QED

Abstract: This course will give an introduction to PQED (Pseudo-Quantum ElectroDynamics) and QED in the context of lower-dimensional condensed matter systems.
I will present the effective Dirac theory of graphene starting from the tight-binding model and I will derive the corresponding Landau levels. I will then describe QED in 2+1 and 1+1 dimensions by showing their relations to other important quantum field theories, such as Chern-Simons theory, Schwinger model, etc.
Finally, I will present the derivation of the PQED action in 2+1 dimensions by remarking its main properties and applications in Dirac materials.

Title: New results on the horizon

Abstract: I will first explain new results on the large longitudinal range of string and large-N gauge theory interactions, with connections to black hole horizons and beyond-GR physics. Then, time permitting, I will cover recent and ongoing developments in the theory and analysis of strongly non-Gaussian perturbations in inflationary cosmology.

COMSOL workshop
Time & Place: 08h00-19h00 in BBG 7.12

Dear All,
Below you can find the program for the COMSOL workshop that will take place on June 20th at the ITP (BBG 7.12). COMSOL Multiphysics is a powerful general-purpose software to solve coupled partial differential equations on arbitrary geometries. You can find more info here.
Those of you who are interested in participating or have any questions, please contact me via email (s.samin@uu.nl) or find me at BBG 7.06.

Notice that the workshop includes a Hands-On session, so please bring your laptops. A temporary COMSOL license with installation instructions will be sent to those who confirm their participation a few days before the workshop.

Program:
---------------------
10:00-12:30 Part I - COMSOL Multiphysics workshop: equation based modelling
• 10:00-11:00 Introduction to COMSOL Multiphysics with live demonstration
• 11:00-11:15 Break
• 11:15-12:30 Hands-On session. Bring your laptop

12:30-13:30 Lunch break

13:30-16:00 Part II - COMSOL Multiphysics: coupling, meshing and solver techniques
• 13:30-15:00 Solving Multiphysics problems: mesh and solvers
• 15:00-15:15 Break
