Mission statement

The main areas of research in this theme are quantum gravity, quantum field theory, string theory and - since 2004 - cosmology. A common theme of much of our work is the investigation of nonperturbative properties of fundamental physical theories at very high energies, with and without supersymmetry. This concerns physical phenomena at or near the Planck scale, which cannot be adequately described by studying fluctuations around flat space-time. Within recent years, new conceptual insights, accompanied by the development of new mathematical tools, seem to have brought us closer to an understanding of the physics at these very small distances, although a complete theory is still lacking.
