2. DITP course Field Theory in Condensed Matter:
Topological Insulators (Monday, 13 February 2012)
Our course on FT in CM will start on February 13 and the topic this year
will be Topological Insulators.
We have set a wonderful program for you, with lecturers from different
places (Utrecht, Amsterdam, Leiden, Paris) and several invited speakers to
talk about experiments.
Please find below the detailed list of topics and dates.
There will be 4 lectures on Mondays, and sometimes only exercises during the
entire day.
The lectures are recommended even if you do not need ECTS anymore, it is a
set of lectures for Master and PhD students in a very fashionable topic,
which connects also to high-energy physics via the possible observation of
Majorana fermions.
The exact location of the lectures is not yet clear. In principle, there is
a room reserved in Utrecht for the entire program, and also assistants to
help with the exercises.
However, if there are lots of students from the other universities, it can
be that some of the lectures will be in Leiden or in Amsterdam.
In any case, until the end of March, the lectures are in Utrecht and the
exercises are always in Utrecht.
The room is BBL 161 (Buys Ballots Lab, 1st floor).
The tentative program is:
Monday: 11:00h-12:45h lectures; 13:15h-15:00h exercises; 15:15h-17:00h
lectures
Martijn Mink is the assistant for the first part of the course and Ralph van
Gelderen is the assistant for the second part.
The program is:
13/02: Quantum Hall Effect (QHE) (Cristiane Morais Smith, Utrecht)
20/02: QHE in graphene (Mark Goerbig, Orsay - Paris)
27/02: Spintronics (Rembert Duine, Utrecht)
05/03: Spintronics (Rembert Duine, Utrecht)
12/03: Exercises and invited talk (experiments)
19/03: Exercises
3. Workshop Noncommutative Algebraic Geometry and
its Applications to Physics (19-23 March 2012)
